I know that this is a concern for some people, and I was a bit apprehensive myself when I started using my card on the net but now I pay on-line for everything related to the site. I even conduct most if my banking on-line at http://www.bankofireland.ie/
The check or money order idea would solve these problems but there are high bank charges and long clearance times for cashing foreign checks, it actually works out quite messy because of the amount of different countries.
There's no easy answer except maybe to try and express how safe internet transactions really are, the merchant (myself) can't see your credit card number, unlike a store clerk can when you use your card in the high street. The only people who get to see your card number are the bank staff at www.worldpay.com
There are really only two things to be careful about when using a card on the net. The first is to look at the address of the page you are on, it should start with https:// and not http:// the "s" means that you are on a secure server and all information is encrypted before it is transmitted. You can see this on my site if you click on the padlock at the top of the payment page. The other thing to be careful about is that while you are paying for something on-line don't get impatient and press the payment button twice this can sometimes charge your card twice.
