Cords one, four and five

Hi
I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this subject. I'm a little lost when it comes to this. I understand the twelve bar blues and where the cords are and in what order. What i don't understand is what notes are in the cord. If one cord is draw 234, can i play just the 2 or 3 or 4 for that bar? Please help
