Hey Bear,
I also use the u-block method and it is harder to bend notes that way. I have been able to bend with it somewhat by keeping my tongue in contact with the comb but dropping my jaw and kind of curving my tongue down in the middle. I don't know how else to describe it but i hope it makes some sense to you. I have much better luck bending notes with the pucker method and just acting like i'm whistling sucking in .
